Foodland to open new grocery store concept in Kāhala on November 11
Kahala MKT. by Foodland will anchor the new Kū‘ono Marketplace at Kāhala, offering curated grocery shopping and food experiences, creative grab-and-go cuisine, and a new full-service restaurant and bar.
Aloha Kāhala and East Honolulu! There’s a new kind of Foodland coming to your neighborhood
in just a few weeks, and it’s unlike any store you’ve experienced before!
Foodland Super Market Ltd. is thrilled to announce the Wednesday, November 11 opening of its newly imagined grocery store concept, KAHALA MKT. by Foodland, as well as the store’s adjoining full-service restaurant and bar named “et al.” It’s everything a market serving Kāhala should be – an intimate but approachable store where customers will discover delectable food, curated natural and organic offerings, and delicious new experiences to satisfy their culinary cravings and desires.
The 13,000-square-foot store will anchor the new Kū‘ono Marketplace at Kāhala, a retail and dining center developed by Kamehameha Schools, and located on Wai‘alae Avenue, mauka of Kahala Mall.
“Kamehameha Schools is committed to supporting the recovery of Hawaiʻi’s economy and welcomes the Foodland ʻohana to Kūʻono Marketplace at Kāhala. Kūʻono will provide residents, visitors and the surrounding community with a nice mixture of products and services for a healthy and active lifestyle,” said Walter Thoemmes, KS’ commercial real estate division managing director.
Distinctly different than traditional Foodland supermarkets and Foodland Farms stores, KAHALA MKT. by Foodland showcases food through a uniquely crafted, neighborhood grocery and dining experience designed specifically for the Kāhala community. Though approximately half the size of Foodland Farms’ Aina Haina store three miles away, KAHALA MKT. by Foodland will be big on grab-and-go, take-out and dine-in food and customer service, with more than 100 team members serving customers at the store and restaurant.
What can you expect from KAHALA MKT. by Foodland when it opens this fall? Well, for starters, this definitely won’t be your ordinary market. KAHALA MKT. by Foodland will capture your attention with a carefully selected array of basic necessities, natural and organic products and gourmet food – alongside an impressive presentation of delicious, chef-made grab-and-go snacks, sandwiches and salads and easy-to-whip-up-at-home meals crafted with mouthwatering taste and everyday convenience in mind. An alcove of wines and spirits sourced by R. Field Wine Company will be staffed by a team passionate and knowledgeable about all things vino. And if you have some time to linger, KAHALA MKT. by Foodland will have its very own full-service restaurant and bar called et al.
An abundance of natural offerings and an impressive range of Hawai‘i-grown, Hawai‘i-raised and Hawai‘i-made produce, products and ingredients will sit alongside a full-service poke counter serving Hawaii’s Best Poke, a gourmet pizza station with a variety of hot, favorite combinations and daily specials, and – get excited now – a create-your-own plate counter with plenty of mouthwatering main entrees and sides for take-out or take-home noshing. KAHALA MKT. by Foodland will also offer a first-rate slate of single-serve and family-size desserts, and bakery items, including artisanal bread, baguettes, croissants, muffins and more.
“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to serve the Kāhala community and look forward to debuting KAHALA MKT. by Foodland and et al. next month,” said Jenai S. Wall, Foodland Chairman and CEO. “The store brings together elements from favorite shops, markets and food venues we’ve seen around the world, and we hope it will be a place that will excite, delight and inspire residents as much as it does us.”
KAHALA MKT. by Foodland will be home to et al., a new full-service restaurant, bar and neighborhood eatery offering an imaginative menu of multi-regional dishes drawing inspiration from local produce and ingredients at the peak of seasonal flavor. The Latin phrase et al. means “and others,” which, to the restaurant team, speaks to the eatery’s desire to welcome and celebrate family, friends and community. The name also encapsulates the spirit of the new restaurant, which will feature a seasonal menu reflecting the melting pot of cultural ingredients and cooking techniques in Hawai‘i and abroad.
The menu at et al. is being crafted by Chef de Cuisine Colin Sato, who recently joined Foodland for this endeavor. Sato, an O‘ahu native, most recently held the same title at Beachhouse at the Moana restaurant in Waikiki. Sato’s prior culinary experience includes 3660 on the Rise, Alan Wong’s Honolulu and Azure restaurants. et al.’s cocktail menu is being crafted by Foodland Corporate Mixologist Matt Rosskopf in partnership with the et al. dining room team, and the restaurant’s menu of delectable pastries and desserts is being created by Pastry Chef Brian Sung. et al.’s overall restaurant curation is being overseen by Foodland Chief Food Officer Chef Keoni Chang. The restaurant and bar will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
